Yakushima's deep forest — Jōmon-sugi, Shiratani Unsuikyō, and the rain. Don't go in October typhoon window.
Round-trip 22km, 10 hours. Start 4:30am at Arakawa trailhead. Bus from Anbō runs the early window.
If Jōmon-sugi is too long, do Shiratani's Taikoiwa course. 5 hours, the moss-covered scenes that inspired Ghibli.
Goretex shell mandatory. Plan 1 extra rest day. Trails close in heavy rain.
Made on-island from Anno potatoes. Smaller-batch than mainland Satsuma. Find at Anbō port shops, not airport.
Toppy hydrofoil 1h50, ¥9,200. Ferry 2 (overnight) 4h, ¥4,900 — sleep on the floor, save the inn night.
